Lady Devils defeat Madison County

Head coach Holly Perdue and her Unicoi County High School volleyball program recently wrapped up a busy week. The Lady Devils opened the week with a showdown against Blue Ridge Conference powerhouse West Greene High School on Sept. 4.
The Lady Buffaloes asserted their presence on the court early and were able to dispatch of the Lady Devils in three sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-9). Senior Lady Devil Carrie Whitson led UCHS with six kills, while Kaylee Nicholson and Grayson Goddard led the dig totals with 30 and 28, respectively. Nicholson also led the team in assists with 46 in the contest.
Junior varsity action saw the Lady Buffaloes defeat the Lady Devils in three sets as Perdue’s squad pushed the match into the decisive third set after a 25-16 win in the second following a 25-20 setback in the opening set. Both squads battled in the final set, but West Greene pulled away with a 15-12 win.
Chelsey Harness led the junior varsity squad with 11 kills. Ashlie Padgett tallied in 23 digs while Brittnie Rice recorded 36 assists.
On Wednesday, Sept. 5, the Lady Devils chalked up two wins against Madison County in non-conference action.
The Lady Devils won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21. Madison County pushed the contest into a decisive fifth set after rallying with two wins (25-19 and 25-18) in the third and fourth sets. Hungry for the victory, Perdue saw her team dominate on the court and hold Madison County to one single point in their 15-1 win in the fifth set.
Whitson recorded 12 kills against Madison County. Goddard chalked up a whopping 53 digs while Nicholson led the assists category once again with 21.
A trip to Kingsport on Thursday, Sept 7, showed promise for the future with the freshmen and junior varsity teams winning key victories over Sullivan North High School. The senior-laden Lady Raider volleyball program was able to knock off the Lady Devils in the final match of the evening.
SNHS won the varsity contest in three sets to chalk up Unicoi’s first conference loss.
Jacqueline Manzanares led the team with six kills; Goddard hauled in 43 digs; and Nicholson finished out the night with 29 assists.
Victoria Bailey led the junior varsity with seven kills, while Hannah Keasling led with 12 digs. Rice led with 13 assists.
In the freshmen contest, Padgett led with two kills. Haley Peterson tacked on 16 digs with Laura Rogers accounted for nine assists.
The Lady Devils kicked off their week on Monday, Sept. 10, at South Greene High School prior to The Erwin Record’s press deadline. The Lady Devils played in a tri-match against SGHS and Cocke County High School.
A trip to Elizabethton is in store for coach Perdue’s squad, as they face off against the Lady Cyclones on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Lady Devils will end their week on Thursday, Sept. 13, at home against the Sullivan East Patriots.
The UCHS freshmen team, recorded a fourth-place finish in a freshmen tournament held at Sullivan North High School over the weekend. The Lady Devils finished in second place following pool play and fell to Dobyns-Bennett in the tournament semifinals in three sets.
The junior varsity squad will play in a tournament at UCHS on Saturday, Sept. 15.
