Lady Devils defeat Johnson County

The winning ways continued for the Unicoi County High School volleyball team last week.
The Lady Blue Devils made the trip to Johnson County on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and earned a hard-fought 3-1 set victory over the Lady Longhorns. The win was the Lady Devils’ second win of the season in Three Rivers Conference play.
Johnson County started to rally in the third set and led 24-17, but the Lady Blue Devils were able to mount a comeback of their own to win the set 26-24.
“We had some awesome team play,” head coach Frank Forsythe said. “We had some great serving from Sarah Grace Larkey (six kills) during that set.”
The game saw the girls battle back after junior Keelie Hall went down in the first set due to an injury. With Hall out, Katelynn Bennett came up in a big way for UCHS, leading the team in kills with 13. Freshman Brooklyn Jones tacked on 10 of her own.
UCHS also had their senior tandem of Laura Rogers and Ashlie Padgett come up in a vital way with Rogers dishing out 27 assists and Padgett adding three aces, seven kills and five digs.
Savannah Lafever paced the Lady Blue Devil defense from her libero position, leading the team in digs with 15. Lafever also led the way in the ace category with five.
The Lady Blue Devils return to action this week with matches against Providence Academy and Sullivan North after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
UCHS also has a home match against Sullivan South with Three Rivers Conference implications on Thursday, Sept. 17. The underclassmen and varsity will play at the Devils’ Den and the first match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Blue Devils end the week with a tournament scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, at Science Hill High School.
