For the second time in a week, the Unicoi County High School Lady Devil soccer team bested a conference rival.
Just as they had done the previous Monday, the Lady Devils defeated the Lady Warriors, on Monday, Oct. 10, by the score of 4-1. This win was even sweeter for the ladies as it came in the first round of the district tournament.
The victory set up a matchup between UCHS and University High on Tuesday, Oct. 11, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline for this issue. A loss to University High ended the Lady Devils’ season; a victory kept their season alive.
On Oct. 10, junior Jillian Taylor scored three goals for the Lady Devils, while sophomore Juana Ponce scored the other.
“We played hard knowing it could have potentially been our last game,” head coach Bettina Chirica said. “We did the right things, such as defending on the ball side and goal side, and we put passes together in midfield which led to our forwards.
“Our forwards, Juana and Jill, worked well together by playing through balls and making runs off of the ball.”
Her team’s hard work this season showed against the Lady Warriors Monday night, Chirica said.
“Overall as a team I feel our hard work building up our fitness paid off,” she added. “We were able to make the recovery runs in the back, and we were able to beat them with our speed up top. Happy Valley had their opportunities, and they fought really hard.”
The Lady Devils fell to University High and Sullivan South last week.
