The Three Rivers Conference Jamboree on Thursday, Aug. 13, has Unicoi County High School volleyball coach Holly Perdue excited about the upcoming season.
“The girls are looking good,” Perdue said. “I was very pleased with our performance at the jamboree.”
Even with their solid play during the afternoon, the coach said her squad still has some kinks to work out early in the season.
“There are still some little things we need to fix, but overall the girls have made great improvements,” Perdue added. “I have a very young team this year … they have done a great job of stepping up to do anything that I have asked of them.”
Perdue enters her first year as the UCHS volleyball coach, after serving as the Unicoi County Middle School coach during the 2011 season.
“Coaching changes can always be a hard transition for a team, but I think because I have helped coach G (Junia Gindlesperger) in the past, this has been a very smooth transition.” Perdue explained. “She left me with some very talented players that I am hoping to develop more.”
A core of youthful setters will be looking to lead the charge this year.
“My setters: Kaylee Nicholson, Brittnie Rice and Laura Rogers, have really progressed here in the last month,” Perdue said. “I have been pushing them to really take charge of the court and to make some tough game decisions … they have really taken on this role and owned it.”
During the jamboree, which was held at Elizabethton High School, the Lady Devils defeat Johnson County’s volleyball squad.
“I really would like to see this team win the conference in the next couple of years,” Perdue said. “I am hoping I can just continue to develop the girls more. As far as this year, the team and I are just looking to have a winning season.”
If the jamboree is just an early indicator of what fans will see throughout a regular season, fans should expect a competitive volleyball season in the Three Rivers Conference.
The Lady Devils open their season this week with matches against non-conference opponents. On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the ladies will host South Greene at UCHS. The junior varsity match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.; the varsity match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. The ladies will travel to West Greene on Thursday, Aug. 23.
The Lady Devils will stay busy on Saturday, Aug. 25, as they take part in the Cyclone Invitational at Elizabethton High School.
