While they are still looking for their first win of the season, the Unicoi County High School girls soccer team (0-3) continues working hard to improve.
“For the games ahead, we are making sure to work on our fitness while the girls are taking care of their bodies too by getting treatment if needed, icing, stretching and eating a balanced meal,” head coach Bettina Chirica told The Erwin Record.
The opening week of the season saw UCHS fall to Daniel Boone, 2-0, on Monday, Aug. 14, in Erwin, at Sullivan South, 8-2, on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and to Elizabethton, 9-2, in Erwin on Thursday, Aug. 17.
“The players that stood out in the past few games were Spencer Garant, Juana Ponce and Jillian Taylor,” Chirica said. “All three girls work well together in the final third of the game.”
Garant, Ponce and Taylor contributed all the scoring for the team last week.
The games also showed the Lady Devils and their coach aspects of the game upon which they can improve.
“We need to work on our fitness,” Chirica said. “We have been doing well for the majority of the games played so far, but then there comes a point where we get tired and can’t keep up with the level of play. As individuals, I think the players learned that they need to work on fitness and fundamentals outside of practice on their own. As a team, they learned to communicate with one another on the field and got a better understanding of the dynamics of the game.”
The Lady Devils were scheduled to travel to Greeneville for a conference game on Tuesday, Aug. 22, after The Erwin Record’s deadline for this issue.
They are also scheduled to play at Volunteer in conference action on Monday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m.
