Lady Devil defeat North, Central

Undermanned and outgunned, the Lady Devil basketball team was unable to get things going in Carter County as the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones ran their undefeated streak to 24 games with a 92-26 win against Unicoi County High School on Friday, Feb. 5, at John Treadway Gym.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by UCHS (11-16), who remained fourth in the Three Rivers Conference with a 6-5 record.
Hannah Rice (16 points) had the offense going for the Lady Devils in the first quarter, but UCHS was unable to put a hamper on the Lady Cyclones’ offensive production throughout the game. The Lady Cyclones held a 25-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Elizabethton, who saw ETSU-signee Kayla Marosites surpass the 2,000-point plateau in the first quarter, continued the defensive onslaught in the final three quarters, holding UCHS to single digits in each frame.
Lady Devil head coach Kerri King and her team went into the game with limited roster. Halie Padgett is out for the remainder of the season due to a foot injury from earlier in the week. UCHS was also without freshman Kaylee Hendrickson, who was recovering from a nose injury also from earlier in the week.
Rice was one of the three ladies to reach the scoring column for Erwin. Neelee Griffith added eight points, while freshman Chloe Powers added a bucket. The Lady Devils also received quality minutes from the likes of Rachel Lynch, Ashlie Padgett, Ashley Edwards and Kenedy King.
The Lady Cyclones had four players reach double figures with senior guard Emily Kiser leading the way with 30 points.

After their two previous contests against Sullivan Central ended with losses, the Lady Devils would have the last laugh.
In a makeup contest that was moved due to weather, Rice went the defense with a game-high 23 points as UCHS cranked up the defense in a 56-29 win against the Lady Cougars at home on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
The teams previously met on the road in Blountville and during the Johnson City Honda Trailblazer tournament during the month of December.

Halie Padgett and Hendrickson were injured during the contest, but the Lady Devils were able to dig deep to pull away with a decisive 61-36 win over Sullivan North on Tuesday, Feb. 2, on the road.
Edwards and Griffith combined for 28 points as Edwards led the squad with 15 points.
“The wins over North and Central were good wins for us,” King said.
King also said the team is working hard to adjust to playing without Padgett and Hendrickson.
“We are making adjustments,” she added. “We want to be ready for the upcoming district tournament.”
