On Friday, Nov. 30, the Unicoi County High School Lady Devils kicked off Three River Conference play with a 58-52 victory on the road against the Happy Valley Lady Warriors.
The Lady Devils (5-1, 1-0) were led by senior guard Chloe Powers, who finished with 14 points. Senior guard Kaylee Hendrickson and senior post Allee Griffith complimented Powers with 11 points apiece. Griffith also had 5 steals and 6 rebounds, while Hendrickson dished out 7 assists against the Lady Warriors.
Sophomore guard Caroline Podvin finished with 7 points, while junior guard Ashton Vance put up 6 points. Scoring 5 points, was sophomore guard Tenley Holt. Sophomore guard Leah Edney and junior guard Kaylia Street each tossed up 2 points. The Lady Devils held off a late run by the Lady Warriors to hold on to the victory.
“They made a run in the fourth quarter and amped up their physicality and we didn’t match it,” Lady Devils Head Coach Kerri King told The Erwin Record.
Going forward the Lady Devils will work on being more physical.
“We let them push us around,” King said of the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Devils Junior Varsity team also picked up a road victory against the Lady Warriors junior varsity squad, 49-33.
For the junior varsity Lady Devils (1-0,1-0), scoring came from freshmen Abigail Rush with 14 points and Hannah Shelton with 12 points. They were joined by junior Jayla Stockfelt and sophomore Leah Edney with 8 points apiece. Freshman Marissa Soulier scored 5 points and freshman Anniston Hensley finished with 2 points.
The next test for the Lady Devils came on Tuesday, Dec. 4, as they returned home to take on conference foe Sullivan South after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
The Lady Devils will host Johnson County on Friday, Dec. 7, in conference. The Lady Devils then travel to Hampton to take on the Lady Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 10. Junior varsity games are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with the varsity games set for 6 p.m.
