The Unicoi County High School Lady Devil basketball team showed some rust in their return to action following the holiday break.

The Lady Devil’s (8-4, 2-2) traveled to Sullivan East on Friday, Jan. 4, and dropped a Three Rivers Conference game to the Lady Patriots.

The Lady Patriots picked up their first conference win of the season against UCHS by a final of 75-43. The Lady Patriots were led by Kylee Wolfe who accounted for 25 points.

The Lady Devils were led by senior guard Chloe Powers and senior post Allee Griffith with 12 points each. Senior guard Kaylee Hendrickson put up 8 points and junior guard Ashtan Vance scored 6 points in the losing effort. Sophomore guard Tenley Holt scored 3 points and sophomore guard Caroline Podvin finished with 2 points.

There was something amiss in the Lady Devils’ effort as they just could not find a groove against the Lady Patriots.

“We played flat, without heart and did not defend,” coach Kerri King said of the Lady Devil’s performance.

The loss drops the Lady Devils to third place in the Three Rivers Conference behind the Sullivan Central Lady Cougars and the Johnson County Lady Longhorns. Sullivan Central sits atop the standings with a 4-0 Three Rivers Conference record and Johnson County has a 2-1 conference record.

The Lady Devils look to bounce back with a homestand that starts with conference opponent Elizabethton on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at UCHS after The Erwin Record’s press deadline for this issue. The Lady Devils then take aim at the Sullivan Central Lady Cougars, who travel to Unicoi County on Friday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Devils finish their homestand on Monday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m. with a non-conference clash against the Hampton Lady Bulldogs. They will travel to Cloudland on Jan. 15.
