The Unicoi County High School girls’ basketball team is off to a solid start this season.
Last week, the Lady Devils (5-1) won three of four games in the competitive Food City Thanksgiving Classic played at Sullivan East High School in Bluff City.
Head coach Kerri King said she was pleased overall with her team’s play in the tournament.
“I thought as a team we started playing more coherently as the tournament progressed,” she told the Erwin Record. “We communicated better on defense, looked to set each other up and executed on offense. We are making progress.”
The team opened the tournament on Monday, Nov. 25, with a 52-32 win over Unaka. Tenley Holt led the scoring with 21 points, followed by Caroline Podvin, who scored 18 points. Ashtan Vance contributed 6 points during the game, followed by Abigail Rush’s 4, Hannah Shelton’s 2, and Leah Edney’s 1.
The Lady Blue Devils fought hard on Wednesday, Nov. 27, in a game against Greeneville but lost, 58-41, for their first loss of the season. Vance led the way in scoring with 16 points. Holt and Kaylia Street each scored 5. Jocelyn Metcalf scored 4 and Hannah Shelton scored 2.
The ladies bounced back from the loss to Greeneville with a 47-38 victory over Hampton on Friday, Nov. 29. They had an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and held on to that advantage for the victory.
Against Hampton, Podvin scored 16 points in the win. Vance had 12. Holt had 10. Metcalf had 3. Shelton, Street and Rush each scored 2.
The Lady Devils wrapped up the tournament with a 53-29 blowout victory over State Line (Virginia) on Saturday, Nov. 30.
Podvin almost had a triple-double in the game with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals. Shelton scored 10 and had 3 steals. Holt scored 10 and had 4 rebounds. Vance scored 9 and had 7 steals. Laurel Osborne scored 5. Rush and Metcalf each scored 3. Marissa Soulier scored 2 and Leah Edney scored 1.

The Lady Devils were scheduled to travel to Cloudland for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Dec. 3, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline for this issue.
They will travel to North Buncombe High School (North Carolina) for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 4. They will open Three Rivers Conference play at Happy Valley on Friday, Dec. 6. The Lady Devils will return home for non-conference games against Chuckey-Doak on Saturday, Dec. 7, and Hampton on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The junior varsity girls are scheduled to play at 4 p.m., with the varsity girls playing at 6:30 p.m.
