Lady Bucs blank Blue Nation

The 2015 campaign continued for head coach Bettina Chirica and her Unicoi County High School Lady Blue Devil soccer team last week with a trip to Johnson City to face the District 1-A/AA league-leading University High Lady Bucs.
UCHS struggled throughout the rainy evening against UH and were unable to reach the scoreboard, falling in 9-0, on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Civitan Park.
Against a well-structured powerhouse like UH, Chirica said she liked what she saw out of her girls in the second half. Goalkeeper Alex Reynoso provided some saves in the sloppy conditions while Dolores Meza, Fernanda Murillo, Jailene Garcia, Jillian Taylor and Daniela Martinez provided constant pressure the entire night to allow UCHS to have opportunities in UH territory.
“After the first half, we picked our game up and played 100-percent,” she added. “Even though UH is very skillful, we put up a good fight. The girls faced adversity with the weather, but didn’t let it affect them.”
The Lady Blue Devils have received their fair share of growing pains throughout the rebuilding season, Chirica added, but the support has continued for the team from the community.
Members of the Blue Nation made the trip over to Johnson City to tough out the weather conditions.
“We received support by having the parents, teachers … everyone drive to these games to support the girls,” Chirica said. “That really means a lot to them.”
UCHS concludes the regular season this week with three games. The Lady Blue Devils met Sullivan Central and Elizabethton after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
UCHS travels to Kingsport to face Sullivan South in the regular season finale on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m.
