The motivation is there for the Lady Devils.
Unicoi County High School girls basketball team will be the fourth seed in the upcoming district tournament after defeating Johnson County on Friday, Feb. 7, by a 68-38 margin with five girls hitting double figure scoring.
UCHS wrapped up the regular season with a 42-37 defeat to Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 8.
It was a big win for us, UCHS head coach Kerri King said Friday. I thought we did a great job of coming out on defense and adjusting well on their perimeter players. It was a good shooting night for us and hopefully this starts to get us going for the district tournament.
UCHS netted 11 three-pointers against Johnson County and was led by 15 points from junior Haley Webb. Chelsey Harness and Morgan Lee Brown added 12. Neelee Griffith came off the bench and added 11 points, along with sophomore point guard Hannah Rice, and attributed six assists.
We know shes explosive like that, King said of Griffith.
And it comes at the right time, according to King, with the squad still looking to rebound from the loss of Whitley True to injury for the remainder of the season.
It just came natural tonight, Griffith said. This is a big win for us. It says were ready for the tournament and that we can beat the teams that we werent suppose to.
Morgan Lee Brown was another factor in the contest, drilling four three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help put the game in cruise control.
While the offense flowed, the Lady Devils were able to stymie Lady Longhorn Brooke Brown who was held in check to 16 points.
Coach told us we need to stop her from scoring, Morgan Lee Brown said. And if shes in our area that she doesnt get the basketball.
The win also guarantees the Lady Devils as the home team against Happy Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 12, to start postseason time.
