The Lady Devils would not to be denied.
The Unicoi County High School Lady Devils (14-7, 5-1) put themselves in a position to control their own destiny en route to a second straight Three Rivers Conference regular season championship after sweeping their stretch of conference games last week.
The Lady Devils defeated the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones, 45-38, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in front of a packed house at the Devils’ Den in Erwin.
Due to district tournament drawings held before the season, the Lady Devils have the higher number over Elizabethton, so if both squads finish out the season tied for first place, the Lady Devils will hold the tiebreaker.
On Saturday night, the Lady Devils survived a scare from the Happy Valley Lady Warriors and prevailed in overtime, 72-68.
The Lady Devils traveled to Johnson County High School on Monday, Jan. 28, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline. With the win, the magic number for a TRC crown moves to one game. With a loss, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones will move back into that top position after defeating Sullivan East on Saturday night, 75-61.
Saturday’s contest showed the true determination of the Lady Devils, according to head coach Kerri King.
