Ladies fall to 'Betsy

The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones kept their winning ways alive with a 73-36 win over the Unicoi County Lady Blue Devils on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Devils Den in Erwin.
The loss moved Unicoi County to 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the Three Rivers Conference standings. Elizabethton moved to 19-0 on the season.
The Lady Blue Devils opened the game by holding the Lady Cyclones scoreless in the first four minutes. However, Elizabethton got the offense going after that en route to the victory. Kayla Marosites led the Lady Cyclones with 21 points.
Morgan Lee Brown led the Lady Blue Devils with 12 points. Haley Webb scored eight points, including two three-pointers. Hannah Rice scored seven points. Halie Padgett grabbed eight rebounds.
On Friday, Jan. 16, on Warrior Hill, the Lady Blue Devils dispatched Happy Valley, 51-44, in a highly-contested conference affair.
UCHS ended the second quarter on a 11-2 run to cut their halftime deficit to three points, 28-25.
“I think at halftime we were able to get refocused,” head coach Kerri King said. “We were able to rethink things and know how important the game was for the conference standings.”
King’s ball club opened the second half on 6-0 run.
Harness led the effort on the night with 17 points, 11 coming in the second half.
“It’s a big win for us,” Harness said. “We’ve got to get East now and it’ll put us in a good spot for the district tournament. It was a good win for us.”
Happy Valley did not back down late in the fourth, with Jenna Eaton rattling off a quick 7-0 run to open the final quarter.
The Lady Warriors had the attack going with Kalee Johnson (18 points) leading the charge, but UCHS was able to contain the junior standout in the second half.
“They have great players,” Harness said. “We had to contain Jenna (Eaton), Kalee (Johnson) and Annie Woods had those early three-pointers.”
Rice also gutted out a stingy defensive performance. The junior stayed out of foul trouble and played the entire way. She had 15 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists.
Another adjustment came with Neelee Griffith receiving the start for senior Destinie Hayes. Hayes broke her nose on Tuesday, Jan. 13, against Sullivan North and came off the bench for the team.
“I thought all the girls really stood out tonight,” King said. “If you asked me to single out a girl, I couldn’t just because of what each brought to the game tonight. But, I thought Neelee really stepped up starting the game, something new to her at the varsity level and helped us get after it on defense.”
Brown also tossed in 11 points to pace the Lady Blue Devils.
The Lady Blue Devils used a pair of 15-point performances from Brown and Harness to nab a decisive, 65-21, win over Sullivan North on Jan. 13.
UCHS led early in the contest, 22-1, and coasted to victory.
UCHS only has one game on the docket this week, hosting Sullivan East on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Devils Den in Erwin.
Junior varsity girls open action at 3:30 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.
