Ladies end season with loss in district tournament

The Unicoi County High School volleyball team fought to the very end and concluded its season with a valiant effort during the Three Rivers Conference volleyball tournament held on Monday, Oct. 6, at Elizabethton High School.
After falling in an early set romp, the Lady Devils showed their true grit in the final two sets against Sullivan East, but lost, (25-12, 25-20, 25-18).
“It was a disappointing loss, but I’m proud of our team,” Lady Devil head coach Frank Forsythe said. “We had adjustments throughout the year and we had some younger players really step up for us.”
Seniors Destinie Hayes, Hannah Keasling and Victoria Bailey paced the offense with four kills each.
Hayes, along with sophomore Keelie Hall, led the team from the service line with three and two aces, respectively. Junior Laura Rogers had a solid effort with assists, distributing 14 during the evening.
“Destinie’s really been one of our solid hitters all season long,” Forsythe added. “Laura also had a good game with assists with the amount of kills we had.”
On the defensive side of the ball, senior Haley Webb tacked on 14 kills and was joined by Ashlie Padgett’s eight.
Padgett, along with Rogers, is part of a group of players coming up through the ranks who will look to continue a trend of improvement in the coming years.
“The future is bright for the program,” Forsythe said. “Ashlie really stepped in and did a nice job for us on the defensive side of the ball. I can see her being one of our future leaders next year.”
The Lady Patriots had the pace going early in the first set, but UCHS added some firepower in the second, taking a 15-12 lead midway through the contest. East’s attack would allow the team to move on with a contest against Sullivan North on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Elizabethton and Johnson County played in the second opening round game after The Erwin Record’s press deadline with a match against Sullivan South on tap for the winner, also on Tuesday.
The UCHS junior varsity volleyball team end its season in the opening round of the Three Rivers Conference junior varsity tournament held Thursday, Oct. 2, at Sullivan North High School.
