Ladies earn non-conference win

The Lady Bulldogs’ bite was worse than their bark this weekend.
The Unicoi County High School girls’ basketball team kept the road contest close through three quarters, but Hampton catapulted ahead in the fourth for a 50-36 win on Saturday, Dec. 12.
The Lady Devils (4-7) closed out the first period with a 7-6 advantage, but HHS was able to swap spots heading into intermission with their own one-point lead.
After slowly pulling away in third, the Lady ‘Dogs outscored UCHS 17-3 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory. Alexus Grubbs led the way for HHS with a 14-point performance and was joined in double figures by teammate Megan Garland.
UCHS senior Hannah Rice continued to close in on the 1,000-point plateau by scoring a team-high 10 points Saturday.
Halie Padgett and Neelee Griffith dropped five points each while combining for 17 rebounds. Ashley Edwards, Kaylee Hendrickson and Kennedy each dropped 3-pointers.
Chloe Powers and Ashlie Padgett also reached the scoring column in the loss.

The Sullivan East Lady Patriots survived a UCHS barrage to start off their Three Rivers Conference schedule with high marks.
The Lady Devils trailed by 10 points at halftime, but could not survive a 24-point fourth quarter and fell to 1-1 in the conference after a 68-47 loss to the Lady Patriots on Friday, Dec. 11, in Bluff City.
UCHS head coach Kerri King saw her ladies keep pace with the senior-laden Sullivan East crew in the first half, trailing by 10 points, 30-20, at halftime after the home squad outscored Blue Nation 19-12 in the second quarter.
Kassidy Nelson aided the Bluff City ladies in the third, working down low for six points that helped her team outscore UCHS, 14-13, in the third before Sullivan East stepped on the gas in the final frame.
Kara Stafford led the way with 20 points for the Lady Pats and was joined in double figures by Caitlin Stewart and Brandy Watkins with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Halie Padgett was the only UCHS player to hit double-digit scoring with 18 points. The sophomore earned a double-double by hauling in 11 rebounds in the contest.

Blue Nation stepped away from the conference stretch with a trip to Roan Mountain, opening the week with high marks
UCHS went the distance to earn a 45-38 decision against Cloudland on Tuesday, Dec. 8, with a solid team effort.
Cloudland’s Shian Strickland earned a game-high 17 points during the night, but it wasn’t enough to deter the Lady Devils, who saw Rice lead the way with 16 points.
Halie Padgett tacked on 10 in the effort.

UCHS opened this week with a trip to Science Hill on Tuesday, Dec. 15, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
The Lady Blue Devils conclude the week at Sullivan Central High School on Friday, Dec. 18, in Sullivan County. The junior varsity team opens action at 6:30 p.m., followed by the varsity team at 8 p.m.
UCHS will be off for the holiday season before resuming play in the Trailblazer Invitational, beginning on Monday, Dec. 28, at Daniel Boone High School.
