Jr. Blue Devils defeat T.A. Dugger

Jr. Blue Devil Brock Thompson went the distance with a game-high 13 points and the Unicoi County Middle School varsity boys’ basketball team knocked off T.A. Dugger, 38-25, in the first game of an in-school double in Erwin on Thursday, Jan. 7.
UCMS (9-8) battled with the Jr. Cyclones to a 6-6 tie at the end of the first, then clamped down defensively in the second quarter and began to pull away to take a 13-9 lead at halftime.
After nearly matching each other bucket-for-bucket in the third, UCMS unleashed the offense in the fourth, netting 18 points thanks to Thompson, Brett Lingerfelt, Boone Reed, Caleb Adkins and Roby Lemmon to escape with the 13-point win.
Reed tallied in nine points. Lingerfelt, Adkins and Lemmon finished with seven, five and four points to round off the scoring for head coach Ken Hilliard and company.

A 21-point third quarter by Liberty Bell put the stops on any upset in Johnson City by UCMS.
The Jr. Devils hung around with the Patriots, but were unable to stop Liberty Bell en route to a 48-31 loss on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
Reed handled the brunt of the UCMS scoring with a team-high 12 points, with six points coming in the third quarter, but Liberty Bell just had the shots fall their way, Hilliard said.
“I thought we played well,” he said, “but with a team like Liberty Bell, they just shoot the ball well.”
Thompson added six points to help pace the UCMS offense on Tuesday.
