HEAD SENATOR
In an announcement released from Walters State Community College on Friday, Jan. 10, the school announced that it had named associate head coach and Erwin native David Shelton as the new skipper of the Senators program.
Shelton replaces former head coach Joey Seaver. Seaver, who was at the post for six months after the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Ken Campbell, recently accepted a job with the Texas Rangers.
Its something we knew about around early December, Shelton said in an interview with The Erwin Record on Friday. We knew that coach Seaver ultimately wanted to get back into the professionals. Im happy for him and its a good situation for everybody.
The chance to coach at WSCC is an opportunity of a lifetime for the former ETSU assistant coach and longtime assistant at WSCC.
Im excited about this opportunity, Shelton added. Theres no guarantees in this sport, but I could easily see myself retiring from Walters State. Its a great program and our current players were all guys that I have recruited, so the familiarity is there and the guys seemed excited and werent nervous once the news broke.
