Gibson tops in all-star homerun derby

The student athletes from northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia had a chance to step on the diamond for a final time on Thursday afternoon at Boyce Cox Field during the Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual baseball all-star game.
The squad from Tennessee picked up the win, scratching away with a 11-10 game by holding off a late eight-run rally by the boys from Virginia in the bottom of the ninth inning.
One Blue Devil from Unicoi County, Scott Gibson, came away with top honors of his own by bringing home the homerun derby title.
Gibson’s homerun over the other five competitors would be all that was needed to come away with the top nod during Thursday’s activites.
The Boyce Cox Field is the home of the major league baseball team, Chicago White Sox’s minor league affiliated team in Bristol, VA, the Bristol White Sox.
The measurements of the field are: left field 325 feet, center field 400 feet, and right field 310 feet.
