Get moving for virtual A.T. walk

From Staff Reports

Sign up today for the 7th Annual Appalachian Trail Virtual Walk, a friendly competition beginning on May 11 and ending on July 6. To register, please complete the short survey at this link: tiny.utk.edu/2020ATVW. The registration deadline is Sunday, May 10.

The Appalachian Trail Virtual Walk is an eight-week walking program for teams of four or eight people. The teams will compete to see who can log the most miles walking and running. The miles will be tracked along the Appalachian Trail beginning in Georgia and walking north towards Maine while passing through Unicoi County.

It’s simple, fun, and free to join!

• Build a team of four or eight people – teams usually include friends, family, or co-workers. Any age may participate. You can even come up with a fun team name!

• Choose a team captain who will submit the miles that your team members exercise each week. This can include walking, running, using a treadmill, and more.

• Track your progress weekly on a virtual map of the Appalachian Trail.

There will also be great prizes for the individual and team with the most miles! Over the past seven years, team members have reported weight loss, improved blood pressure, reduced stress, and a stronger desire to exercise. Everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit – walking for fitness and for fun!

Help them reach a county goal of 25,000 miles walked! They look forward to seeing the community having fun, enjoying the summer weather, and getting fit! Contact the UT Extension office at 735-1637 for more information.
