Devils suffer first loss this season

A weekend non-conference doubleheader saw an offensive baseball showcase in Erwin.
The Unicoi County High School Blue Devils (12-1, TRC 7-0) split the two-game affair with Bourbon County (Ky.) on Saturday, April 6, at Baxter Field. The Blue Devils scored the win in the first game, 10-9, while Bourbon picked up the win in game two, 18-6.
At the time of The Erwin Record’s press deadline, Blue Devil head coach Charlie Baxter’s career record was 999-309. The Blue Devils hosted Elizabethton Monday evening in Erwin.
Saturday saw the Blue Devils score the win in game one led by Austin Green (5-0) on the mound and a pair of home runs from Ethan Rice and Austin Garrabrant. Green and Connor Simpson each ripped in RBIs during the contest.
In game two, the Blue Devils would strike early with a five-run first inning, but the Colonels would fire rope in 14 unanswered runs to even up the series.
Green crunched his first home run of the year in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI triple from Rice and an RBI base hit from Ryan Lingerfelt capped off the five-run avalanche by the Blue Devils.
UCHS would have Jonathan Davis drive in a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Colonels would rally to pull away with the victory.
Three Rivers Conference action highlighted the week with an improved Happy Valley baseball squad making the trip to Baxter Field on Friday, April 5. The Warriors led 8-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but key baserunning propelled the Devils to a 9-8 win.
