Devils play for playoff berth

Last Tuesday night set a roadblock in the playoff aspirations of the Unicoi County Middle School football team, but Monday’s results could pay dividends for head coach Larry Howell’s team.
The UCMS Blue Devils suffered a close, 14-12, loss to Colonial Heights in the home finale of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
“It was a tough loss,” Howell said. “I thought we were evenly matched and a two-point conversion separated us in the end.”
The loss wasn’t due to a lack of effort, according to Howell.
“Our kids played hard-nosed and tough all night and I was proud of their effort,” he added. “It was really a well-played game with no turnovers on either side. It was bitter to come up short but we can’t wallow in self pity because we have Vance away on Monday.”
Cameron Higgins tallied in the Blue Devils’ first score of the night. Nick Fender tacked on the team’s final touchdown.
After The Erwin Record’s press deadline on Monday, Oct. 1, the Blue Devils faced Vance Middle School in Bristol in a game that would be a deciding factor in the Middle Eight Conference playoff hopes for UCMS.
At the time of The Erwin Record’s press deadline, UCMS was in a three-way tie with Liberty Bell and Vance middle schools. The deciding win over Vance would likely put the Blue Devils, but other games on Tuesday, Oct. 2 could decide the bracket position for the schools.
In the playoff situation, the top four teams from the conference will play. The top team will play the fourth seeded team while the two seed will play the number three ranked squad.
Both games will be hosted by the highest seeded time and first game is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4, and the championship game is set for Tuesday, Oct. 9.
