The effort by the Unicoi County High School football team in its final scrimmage was a “great way” to finish the preseason, according to
head coach Glenn White. The Blue Devils faced the North Greene Huskies at the UCHS track field on Friday, Aug. 5.
“Overall, we had a good night,” White said. “We did a lot of good things on both sides of the ball.”
The Blue Devil defense manhandled the Huskies’ offense for much of the evening.
“Our defense played very well,” the head coach said. “After watching the film, I was very impressed with our defensive line. They got off the ball hard and fast. We controlled the line of scrimmage most of the night.”
White said he was also “impressed” with the entire defense.
“It’s an aggressive defense,” he added. “The players are working hard.”
Not to be outdone, the Blue Devil offense marched down the field with seeming ease on several drives. These resulted in touchdowns, both on the ground and through the air.
“We scored on some big plays,” White said. “(Quarterback) Kendrick (Williams) is doing a great job.”
Cameron Higgins had several big runs for the Blue Devils on Friday.
“He carried the ball well,” White said. “Our guards did their jobs helping us move the ball.”
Friday’s scrimmage also saw the Devils’ junior varsity offense and defense take the field against North Greene’s varsity squad.
“That was another high point of the night,” White said. “Our younger guys did very well.”
The Blue Devils will get a dress rehearsal for opening week when they travel to South Greene on Friday, Aug. 12, for jamboree action. UCHS will face Sullivan North in the second quarter, which should start around 6:30 p.m., according to White.
The Blue Devils will open the 2016 season the following week at home at Gentry Stadium against the South Greene Rebels. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“Playing in front of a packed house would greatly help our men,” he said. “We want to see a packed Gentry Stadium on Aug. 19. I think fans will see a good football team that night.”
