Devils place in T-N Relays

Unicoi’s track and field team pole vaulted their way to success on Friday.
The Times-News Relay event at Sullivan North was by invite only, and Harrison Becker and Kyle Greene took advantage of the invites by showing the area how the Blue Devils can do in the pole vaulting event.
“It’s big for our kids to get the chance to participate in the event,” coach Joshua Epperson said. “Having a chance to be a part of an event with some of the best athletes around and place as high as we did is a big step forward for our program.”
Becker and Greene, who placed second and third, respectfully, showed the area their talents by clearing 11 feet during the pole vault section of the track events.
“Kyle (Greene) has improved greatly during the season,” Epperson said. “He’s only a sophomore and has a great chance of getting to state for the pole vault event, minus a couple of scratch we could of seen the him come away with second.”
Greene, who placed third, will be looking to follow the same path as Becker, who went to Murfreesboro as a Blue Devil sophomore.
“Becker went to state as a sophomore for the team in the pole vault,” the coach explained. “It was a great thing for the senior to go out and perform the way he did.”
The boys weren’t the only Devils around during the day.
Lady Devil Kristen Haun was a part of the daily events, tying for ninth overall during the high jump event for Unicoi.
“Overall, I’m just impressed of what we’re able to do during the Relay,” the coach said about his Devils.
The Blue Devils will be looking to continue this recent string of successful meets by competing in the regional events, held in Kingsport.
“We’ve got 16 members of our team participating, I’m really proud of the way they’ve performed for us over the year,” Epperson said. “The groups have the potential to do great things during the day, the talent will continue to improve as we move forward throughout the rest of the meets, but our group will be ready.”
The track teams will be in action on Wednesday, May 12, at Sullivan North for the regional meet.
Events will begin early for teams, with the start time scheduled for 10 a.m.
