Devils defeat Gibbs, fall to Crockett

Basketball in Knoxville is ringing in the new year for Unicoi County High School.
The Blue Devils opened the Bearden “Super 16” basketball tournament with a 61-54 win over Corryton Gibbs on Monday, Dec. 28.
UCHS (7-6) continued play in the winners bracket on Tuesday, Dec. 29, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline, against Austin-East. The Blue Devils will continue action on Wednesday.
Monday’s win proved to be pivotal for the Blue Devils, according to head coach Michael Smith, as the team works their way through the end of 2015 in preparation for the second of half Three Rivers Conference schedule.
“I was very proud of the guys for their effort in the game,” Smith said. “When we needed a bucket in the fourth quarter, we executed and got it. That was a big win over a very good AAA team from Knoxville to prepare us for conference play.”
Sophomore Trevor Hensley led UCHS with 18 points, five boards and four assists in the victory. The Blue Devils had two other players in double figure scoring: Clay Simpson, who posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Jacob Smith, who added 12 points with eight boards.
Dylan Putman had six assists and dropped seven points. Hunter Hensley added six points, while Chase McNabb had four points and Dalton Spears added three. Spears also tallied four boards, four assists and three steals.

UCHS brought the pressure early, but David Crockett netted five players in double figures to earn a 68-46 victory over the Blue Devils on Tuesday, Dec. 22, in Washington County.
The Blue Devils fired out the gate early against the Pioneers to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, propelled by six points from Trevor Hensley, who scored a game-high 18 points.
Crockett poured on the offense heading into half, outscoring UCHS by a 25-14 margin and rolled the effort into the second half to pull away with the victory.
Simpson reached double figures in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Putman and Jacob Smith earned seven points each to round out the scoring.
Senior Dustin Day led the Pioneers with 16 points. Ian Martin tacked on 13, while Patrick Good, Josh Releford and Brenden Coleman all added 12 points each.

The Blue Devils will wrap up the new year in the Super 16 tournament before returning to Three Rivers Conference action. UCHS will travel to Johnson County on Tuesday, Jan. 5, to square off against the Longhorns and will end the week against Sullivan North at home on Friday, Jan 8.
The junior varsity Blue Devil are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 8 p.m. each day.
