The Unicoi County High School football team turned in a solid showing in a scrimmage against a regional powerhouse on Friday, July 29, as they continue preparing for the 2016 season.
The Blue Devils faced the Cloudland Highlanders in preseason action and head coach Glenn White liked what he saw from his squad.
“I thought we did real well,” head coach Glenn White said of his team’s performance on Friday. “When you can have success against a team coached by Mike Lunsford you’re going in the right direction. I was pleased. We were very aggressive.”
The Blue Devil defense rose to the challenge against the Highlanders – only allowing Cloudland to score once the entire night.
“Our defense played very well,” the head coach said.
The offense also moved the ball well, both in the air and on the ground, which led to several scores, White said.
“Backs running hard means the offensive line is doing a good job,” he added. “We are still growing there, but I was pleased with their effort.”
This week, White said his team will continue to take steps to be as ready as possible for opening week.
“We are going to work on polishing our blocks and our offense,” he said. “We are going to make sure our defense is where it needs to be. We are about 95 percent sure who will play where. Of course, players still have an opportunity to win positions. We are also going to be working on special teams.”
The Blue Devils are scheduled to continue preseason action on Friday, Aug. 5, with a scrimmage against North Greene. This contest will be held at the UCHS track field beginning at 6 p.m.
White said fans can expect a “game like” situation against North Greene.
“We are going to treat this scrimmage more like a game,” he said. “This should give us an outlook on what Friday nights will be like.”
The Blue Devils will open the 2016 season against South Greene on Friday, Aug. 19. The game will be played at Gentry Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
