County all-stars begin postseason tournaments

With Independence Day around the bend, the Unicoi County Little League all-stars brought their own type of fireworks a week early on diamonds across the area.
UCLL was the hotbed of action last season hosting multiple tournaments. This season, the organization only hosted the 11- and 12-year-old baseball tournament with a successful showing, according to tournament director Aaron Banner.
“It has been a great tournament so far,” Banner said. “There’s been no problems with anyone and everyone has been great to work with. We’ve seen a great turnout the past two nights.”
The future Blue Devils were on the verge of qualifying for the district tournament after The Erwin Record’s press deadline. UCLL squared off against Johnson City Major on Monday, June 29, at 7 p.m.
UCLL pushed their way into the contest after taking a shutout victory over Johnson County on Sunday, June 28.
“They really put the bat on the ball,” Banner said.
Updates on the contest will be featured online and in the next edition of The Erwin Record.

The 7- and 8-years olds in the region both experienced a bevy of success last season with Carter County and Unicoi County both qualifying for the state championship in 2014.
Both teams met on Sunday, June 28, in Elizabethton after rain postponed their projected Saturday start time.
Blue Nation’s ladies used a bit of small ball to make things interesting later on in the contest, but were unable to get into the win column by falling in a 13-4 loss against Carter County.
Shortstop Katie Sparks got Unicoi County on the scoreboard in the third inning after getting on base on a passed ball. Sparks then used her quickness to scamper home after a hit from Bailey Adams.
Sara Bailey, Melissa Reynoso, Chloe Moore, Kendra Cantrell and Kynzie Jones each put their bat on the ball late to help orchestrate a rally, but it would be too little, too late in the end.
The squad was scheduled to play again on Monday, June 29, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
