Coaches honor Bayless

Prior to the start of the District 1-AA quarterfinal game between the Happy Valley Warriors and the Sullivan North Golden Raiders on Friday, the coaches of the Three Rivers Conference, with assistance from Hampton’s Jerry White, made a special presentation to Happy Valley’s coach Charlie Bayless, who recently announced his retirement. The 88-year-old Bayless (inset) served as a head coach for 60 seasons, 59 of which were spent at the helm of the Warrior program. Bayless fi nished his career with 964 wins and led his 1974 team to a state championship. The Golden Raiders defeated the Warriors, 53-42, on Friday, ending the Warriors’ tournament hopes and the career of a true coaching legend.
“Coach Bayless has been a mentor and friend to me for many years,” Unicoi County’s head coach
John English said. “He has had a wonderful career and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him
and what he has accomplished.”
