Coach: Team 'continuing to get better'

The start of a Lady Devil soccer program at Unicoi County High School featured a pair of bouts against traditionally solid girls’ soccer teams from the region last week.
Head coach Bettina Chirica and her Lady Blue Devils opened up the season on Monday, Aug. 17, against Sullivan South with a 10-0 defeat before ending the week on Thursday, Aug. 20, against University High at Civitan Park.
UCHS fell to the Lady Jr. Bucs by an 8-0 margin to fall to 0-2 on the season, but the head coach said she liked what she is seeing from her team as the season progresses.
“From our scrimmage with David Crockett to the season opener with Sullivan South, I see the improvement,” Chirica said Thursday. “The girls are continuing to get better and I saw a lot of effort tonight.”
With a debut season, the wins and losses are currently on the backburner as the team continues to learn the landscape of the District 1-A/AA league, Chirica said.
“I’m not worried about the wins and losses right now,” she added. “We’re a new team and we’re wanting the girls to learn and keep getting better during the season.”
The heart and effort looks to net success moving forward with players, including the likes of Fernanda Murillo, Ruth Diaz and Jillian Taylor, starting to come into their own on the field, the head coach said.
UCHS will have a couple of weeks to practice before getting back into the thick of their schedule. The Lady Blue Devils will meet Happy Valley on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
The current location for the contest was up in the air prior to The Erwin Record’s press deadline. The teams are potentially looking into using a neutral location for the game, Chirica said.
