Members of the Unicoi County High School track and field program continue to make noise in East Tennessee.

“Our athletes have gotten to experience two really great meets over the last week,” head coach Megan Davis told The Erwin Record. “Not only has the weather been much warmer and more suitable to running, but the level of competition has continued to push our kids harder and harder and we are seeing some great results from this.”

On Thursday, April 12, the Blue Devils and Lady Devils traveled to Elizabethton and competed against Three Rivers Conference opponents, including the host team, Sullivan East, Sullivan Central, Johnson County and Happy Valley. They also competed against non-conference opponents, including University High, Tennessee High, Providence Academy and Cocke County.

“Our kids were able to use this meet to prepare for the conference meet, as well as prepare for their chance to advance to the sectional meet,” David said. “Overall, I was extremely pleased with how our athletes performed and the drop in many of their times.”

The girls 4×800-meter relay team, which is made up of Valeria Ponce, Kaitlyn Tilson, Jillian Taylor and Megan Todd, won first place. Taylor also took fifth place in the 400-meter race.

For the Blue Devils, Kody Lewis won first place in the 200-meter and second place in the 100-meter. Roby Lemmon took fourth place in the shot put.

On Saturday, April 14, UCHS athletes traveled to Dobyns-Bennett for the Texas Roadhouse-DC/TC Relays meet.

“This meet hosted 15-20 teams, including Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett, Daniel Boone, Volunteer, Sullivan South, Greeneville, Morristown-East and Morristown-West – teams that we will compete against at the sectional meet on May 12. This meet was a great opportunity for our athletes to get a feel for the level of competition they will have in the path to the state meet.”

Davis said the top-three finishers in each event at the meet received medals. Lewis earned his first high school medal by finishing third in the boys 100-meter.

“It was great to see Kody and the rest of our athletes rise to the challenges of some really great competition,” David said.

Lewis also took fourth in the 200-meter. John Campbell raced to a 10th-place finish in the steeplechase.

Todd won fifth place in the girls 3200-meter. Halie Hawkins took sixth in the pole vault. The girls 4×800-meter relay team won sixth.
