Bulldogs race past Devils

The 'Dogs were let loose on Gentry Stadium Friday night.
Hampton quelled any chances of an opening season win for Unicoi County High School in a 48-12 victory.
“They were a tough, tough team,” UCHS head coach Robert McElwee said of the Hampton Bulldogs. “I think we underestimated them in the fact that I thought we were tougher than that. We got outplayed at every position tonight.
“I think we are a good team and we have a lot of life in us … but it is the attitude,” McElwee added. “If you reflect back at the game, it looked a lot like last year and that's what we're trying to change.”
Hampton opened the game with sophomore tailback Adam McClain rumbling from eight yards out on a touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
The Blue Devils were forced to punt on their next drive, but a punt a fumble resulted in sophomore Dylon Burgess hopping on the ball to set up Blue Devil shop at the Bulldogs’ 26-yard line.
Cameron Higgins fought up the middle for a three-yard gain on second down and was followed by Luke Fronckoski’s touchdown run from 20 yards out. A failed point-after attempt placed the score 7-6 in the Bulldogs favor.
Fronckoski, who had over 100 yards, tacked on a 3-yard score in the second quarter to wrap up the scoring for the Blue Devils.
The Bulldogs added to their lead on a touchdown run from Jerry Lunsford and three touchdown throws from quarterback Coby Jones. Lunsford added an interception for a score to start the third quarter from midfield while Jake Lyons added a late score in the fourth.
On offense for the Blue Devils, Brandon Caldwell, Will Shelton and Higgins were popular targets in the passing game for quarterback Cody Jack Rogers.
Shelton had two grabs for 18 yards and a pair of first down conversions. Caldwell had 29 yards on his receptions.
Hunter Hensley led the defense with 10.5 tackles. Burgess had nine stops.
Linemen Justin Nelson, Chris Johnson and John Burnett added six stops each.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 29 with a trip toward Jonesborough on tap to face David Crockett.
“If there is a silver lining in tonight, it is you get your butt kicked like that it … you can take things more seriously and not take things for granted,” McElwee said. “We'll use this as a learning session going forward.”
