Coming off an impressive win against Happy Valley, the Unicoi County football team looked like it might be hitting its stride when it visited undefeated Claiborne for a key Region 1-3A matchup on Friday, Sept. 18.
The Blue Devils hit a wall instead.
The Blue Devils fell 48-7 to the Bulldogs, who improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Region.
“It was as disappointing of a performance as we have had since I’ve been the head coach,” Blue Devils coach Drew Rice said. “We just got outplayed on both sides of the ball and there’s not much else to say about it.”
Claiborne, coached by former Mars Hill quarterback Nathan Medlin, has outscored opponents 163-26 this season. Storm Livesay started the night with an 87-yard TD run and finished with 187 yards rushing. Quarterback Eli Stone rushed for 142 yards and passed for 75.
“We have to be more consistent,” Rice said. “We played lights out the week before and then Friday night we couldn’t get anything going on either side of the ball.”
Bryson Peterson, playing in a backup role, threw a touchdown pass to Evan Huff in the second half.
Unicoi County will host Sullivan East on Friday, Sept. 25, at Gentry Stadium.
“We are going to get back to work this week and get it fixed,” Rice said. “We are a better football team than how we played Friday night.”
