The undefeated streak in league play continued for the Unicoi County High School boys basketball team (13-8, 7-0) last week.
On Friday, Jan. 19, the Blue Devils defeated the Happy Valley Warriors, 58-48, on the road in Carter County in Three Rivers Conference action.
“I thought we played well in the first half,” Blue Devil head coach Michael Smith said. “We got to the early lead because we forced some turnovers which led to easy baskets for us.”
UCHS held a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 36-21 lead at the break.
In the early minutes of the third quarter a layup by junior Brett Strother and a three-pointer by sophomore Brett Lingerfelt gave UCHS a 41-21 lead and it appeared the Blue Devils had total control of the game. However, the Warriors began to chip away at that lead and trailed by 15 points, 47-32 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Warriors cut the lead to 10 points on a few occasions, but the Blue Devils were able to hold on for the win.
“In the second half it was hard for us to generate any momentum with the way the game was being played,” Smith said. “We didn’t play as well defensively in the second half. We took a 20-point lead in the third quarter and got lethargic after that. But, we were able to hold on for the win.”
Trevor Hensley scored 24 and had 3 assists in the win. Troy Podvin had a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Strother scored 6 and had 5 rebounds. Lingerfelt and Gavin Casey each scored 3. Brock Thompson scored 2.
