Exciting single and doubles matches highlighted the Blue Devils’ day after a week away from the tennis courts.
Unicoi County High School hosted Class AAA Volunteer on Friday, April 15, at Fishery Park and the program was able to earn a victory on the boys’ side (7-2), while the Lady Falcons got the brooms out for a sweep over the Lady Devils.
“The match was a big help for both teams,” UCHS head coach Jonathan Kenney said. “With our match against North Greene getting postponed, we haven’t played in a week. It was great to see that level of competition since we’re preparing for a tough week ahead. The guys really played well, while the girls are continuing to learn and gain experience.”
Senior Carter Powers was on the end of an exciting bout in the match for four seeds. With questionable outs being called, Volunteer began to creep back into the contest. Powers ultimately regained the advantage and took the contest (9-8), winning in a tiebreaker.
The Blue Devil duo of Sam Murillo and Trent Treadway saw much of the same in their doubles contest, but weathered through the adversity to score the 9-8 win, taking the tiebreaker (7-5).
Through the individual play, Dalton Spears and Treadway picked up 8-2 wins for UCHS, while their teammates Murillo and Christian Leon battled, but fell in 8-6 decisions. Volunteer forfeited the sixth seed game.
In the other doubles contest, the team of Spears/Leon picked up an 8-5 triumph.
