Athletes advance to sectional

CJ Wells and Stephanie Wisse will lead a group of Unicoi County High School track and field athletes to Knoxville this week to compete for a chance to qualify for the state meet.
The Blue Devils and Lady Devils qualified multiple athletes for the TSSAA East A/AA Sectional set for Thursday, May 14, at Christian Academy of Knoxville after hauling in top finishes at the sub-sectional meet held on Tuesday, May 5, at Greeneville Middle School.
Top finishers at the section will compete in the TSSAA Spring Fling Championships beginning May 18.
Wells and Wisse are back in the big dance for a second consecutive season serving as the leaders for head coach Megan Davis.
Both athletes may be in a similar scenario as last year, but the pair took different journeys to reach their destination.
A senior season stricken with injury finally turned for Wells during his appearance in Greeneville. Wells made noise finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles by clocking in with a time at 16.47. Isaac Carson of West Greene won the 110-meter at 16.14, followed up by Sullivan South’s Christian Comsa at 16.20.
Being medically cleared was a refreshing feeling, Wells said during a practice session at UCHS on Thursday, May 7.
Wisse’s standout sophomore season continued at Greeneville last week where she scored another sweep, the 100- and 200-meter races. The Lady Blue Devil continued to torch the track coming off her breakout performance at the Times-News Relays on May 1.
Controlling her main event, Wisse finished with a time of 26.31 in the 200-meter, outracing Greeneville speedster Katelyn Hadjopoulos (26.39) and Elizabethton Lady Cyclone Autumn Thomas (26.82).
In the 100-meter, Wisse outraced the competition with a time of 12.89, defeating Thomas’ 13.06 and Carsen Whitlock of Happy Valley (13.51).
A handful of Lady Blue Devils also punched their tickets for the sectional.
Sophomore Megan Todd will pull double duty after earning second place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:56, just a few second behind winner Alissa Furches, of West Greene, at 12:36.
The all-freshmen Lady Blue Devil 4×800-meter team earned their bid with a fourth-place finish. The relay team is comprised of Todd, Alexis Harvey, Katie Crain and Kaitlyn Tilson.
The Lady Devils’ 4×400-meter relay team also earned their way to the section with a top-five finish at Greeneville. Lady Blue Devils part of that team include: Crain, Harvey, Jillian Taylor and Daniela Martinez.
A pair of UCHS athletes also earned at-large bids to the competition. Lady Blue Devil Laura Rogers pole-vaulted at six-foot to earn a spot and Blue Devil Cameron Higgins tossed a discus at 114-01 to earn his spot.
