Apple Festival Bowl announced

Unicoi County's Apple Festival will now have an event for the gridiron lovers.
In conjunction with Alumni Football USA, Unicoi County alumni will square off against Washington County's former football stars in the first annual Apple Festival Alumni Bowl scheduled for Oct. 4 at Gentry Stadium.
Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m.
“We're excited to help organize this event,” said Jessica Tompkins, an official with the organization.
A team meeting for Unicoi County members already part of the team, or interested in participating, is set for Thursday, Aug. 28, at Rocky's Pizza in Erwin at 7 p.m.
“It is a great opportunity for past football players to come out and play one more time and raise money for the school,” Tompkins said. “We hope to see a good turnout Thursday.”
The game is open to any past graduate of Unicoi County High School who is over 18. The minimum requirement for a team is 25 players and the Blue Devils currently have 20 members signed up.
A player fee, between $75-90, is required and includes equipment and other needed items for the event.
Money earned from the event will be used for the high school, Tompkins also said.
The organization has raised over $1.5 million for schools across the state. The organization uses different outlets to raise money, including concessions.
