William W. “Bill” Wiggand, age 78, 2337 Zane Whitson Drive, Unicoi, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital’s long-term care unit following a brief illness.
Mr. Wiggand was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Raymond and Pansy Peterson Wigand.
He was a member of Unicoi United Methodist Church and served as an at-large member of the church council. He was a lifetime member of the Unicoi Ruritan Club, receiving the Ruritan Forever Award in February. He also served on the board of directors for Unicoi County Farm Bureau and was a charter member of the Unicoi Volunteer Fire Department.
Many knew Bill through his years of courteous, customer service as a salesman at Erwin Motors. He retired in 2001 after 30-plus years. He was an employee of the National Casket Co. for 17 years prior to this. He continued part time to “meet and greet” at Jones and Church Farms following his retirement.
Other than his parents, Mr. Wiggand was preceded in death by: one brother, Howard Wiggand; an infant sister; his maternal grandmother, Treaty Peterson; and a very special cousin, Dot Chrisawn.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 57 years, Dorothy “Dot” Wiggand; one son, Bryon Wiggand and wife, Julie, Unicoi; one daughter, Pam Wiggand Banks and husband, Jeff, Unicoi; one grandson, Lance Banks; three granddaughters, Heather Banks, Lierin and Lydia Wiggand; special niece, Phyllis Riddle and husband Howard of Erwin; two half-sisters, Linda Wiggand Henry, Newark, Ohio, and Nancy Wiggand Conner, Heath, Ohio; and three half-brothers, Paul Wigand, Westerville, Ohio, Carlous Wigand, Newark, Ohio, and Wayne Wiggand, Canterburg, Ohio; four brothers- in-law, Jimmy Jones, and wife Mona, Columbia, Tenn., Carl Jones and wife Sue, Erwin, George Jones, Spring Hill, Tenn., and Buddy Jones and wife Shirley, Erwin; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy Jeffers and husband Lendall, Sulpher Springs, Tenn., and Ann Pate and husband Anderson, Erwin.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at Unicoi United Methodist Church. The Revs. Todd Kingrea and Garland James officiated. Special music was provided by Gary Amos and Pat Vanover.
Active pallbearers were Len Jeffers, Ralph Jeffers, Wayne Jones, Mike Jones, Neal Jones, David Rogers, Allan Sutphin and Bo Bennett. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Unicoi Ruritan Club, the Unicoi Farm Bureau board of directors, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and the Unicoi Volunteer Fire Department.
Committal service was held at Jones Cemetery Monday, March 7, at 11 a.m.
