In Memory Of
William R. Cotton Thompson
William Ronald Cotton Thompson, of Friend, was born in Unicoi County, Tennessee January 25, 1938, to Lewis and Lila (Presnel) Thompson, the 2nd of four sons. He passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 at Bryan East Medical Center, Lincoln, at the age of 78.
As a young boy he attended Love Chapel School through the 10th grade. Cotton, as he was nicknamed by his family and friends, enlisted in the US Army and served from 1963 to 1965, before returning to Tennessee where he started his life-time career as a truck driver, retiring after 55 years. In the beginning he hauled coal, lumber and other products. Cotton drove for a number of trucking firms including Alpo and Crete Carrier where he eventually purchased his own truck. After his retirement from over-the-road trucking, Cotton transported grain for area farmers and loved every minute of it.
He was united in marriage on March 13, 1971 to Effie Harris at Burnsville, North Carolina, and to this union, a daughter, Laura was born.
Together they briefly made their home in Erwin, Tennessee, moving to Dorchester, Nebraska in 1971, later moving into Friend.
Cotton spent most of his time on the road, but his family was precious and in his spare time he enjoyed attending his grandchildrens sporting events and going fishing with his grandchildren and friends. He was a caring father, grandfather and kind to all he knew. Cotton enjoyed being with his grandchildren more than anything. He enjoyed watching Nebraska and Tennessee football. Cotton attended NASCAR races when possible and enjoyed watching them on TV, as well as going to local racing events.
During his working years, he enjoyed using his CB to communicate with others on the road, and when at home, his base unit would reach friends all over the United States. Cotton was baptized in July of 2015 and joined the Friend United Methodist Church.
