Virginia Slagle Tipton, 91, 324 Simmons St., Erwin, died Monday, March 28, 2011, following a brief illness.
She was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina but had lived most of her life in Erwin. Mrs. Tipton was a daughter of the late Jake and Bessie Garland Slagle.
She was one of three living charter members of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, Erwin. Mrs. Tipton was a member over 60 years and served as treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary over 50 years. She took exemplary pride in her duties as a founder of the church and her position of treasurer.
Her ambition and goal was to serve the Lord every day and to be a shining example of how God worked in her life. God and family were foremost in her life.
Other than her parents, Mrs. Tipton was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, R.C. Tipton in 1989, and siblings, Bill, Ted, Harry, Earl and Trula.
She is survived by one son: Donald Tipton, Johnson City; two daughters: Shirley Elliott, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Venda Harrell and husband, Toney, Concord, N.C.; four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; two brothers: Jack and Lee Slagle and a sister Helen Hobson.
The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home. The service will follow with the Rev. Talmadge Brown officiating. Special music will be provided by organist, Inez Chandler. The committal service will immediately follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
