Tommy John Pate., 85, born June 12, 1930 in Flag Pond, TN, passed on Saturday, April 29th at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a son of the late Milton and Brejetta Mathes Pate. He was a member and deacon of Shallow Ford Baptist Church, as well as a member of the building and grounds committee. Mr. Pate was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and an avid gardener. He worked in the lumber industry and later for Nuclear Fuel Services, where he retired in 1990 following 10 years of service. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pate was preceded in death by a son, Keith Pate, sisters; Edith Rice, Sue Simmons, Inez Johnson, Bashie Moore, and Arlene Clouse; brothers, Clarence, Ernest, Floyd, and Gleason Pate. Tommy John Pate has left behind to cherish his memory: Wife of 60 years, Betty Foster Pate, Children; James S. Pate and his wife Cathy, Karen Gentry and her husband Frank, Janie Love and her husband Tim, all of Erwin Grandchildren; Dr. Allison Athon and her husband Todd, of Johnson City, Dr. Ryan Love. Of Asheville, NC, Kelsey King and her husband Chris, of Orange Beach, AL Whitney Pate, of Johnson City, Kelly Pate, of Erwin Olivia Coontz and her husband Will, of Erwin Anica Gentry, of Knoxville Great Grandchildren; Callie and Tess Athon, of Johnson City, Brother; Anderson Pate and his wife Ann, of Erwin Several nieces and nephews. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Tommy John Pate in a funeral service to be at 3:00 PM Tuesday May 3, 2016 in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home with Rev. Zach Smith officiating. Vocal selections will be provided by Jamie Tipton. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 1:00 PM and continue until the hour of service at Valley Funeral Home and other times at his home. Graveside committal service will be held at Roselawn Memory Gardens in Johnson City immediately following the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Bill Pate, Bob Pate, Doug Cooper, Doug Bowman, Alan Sutphin, and Tom Bowman. Honorary pallbearer will be Gary Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shallow Ford Baptist Church at 315 Old Highway Rd., Erwin, TN 37650.
