The Rev. Timothy Gene “Tim” Bennett, 50, of Erwin, died Friday, July 1, 2011. He was born on June 30, 1961 in Erwin, to the late T. J. and Nelle Kerns Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a 1979 graduate of Unicoi County High School, a 1983 graduate of East Tennessee State University, and a 1986 graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., where he earned a Master’s Degree in Christian education.
He had attended Calvary Baptist Church since 1961, having become a member in 1969. He served there as youth minister and associate pastor for 22 years, until his retirement in 2008.
Mr. Bennett had a great love for Unicoi County, and considered it an honor and privilege to have served the people here. A part of that service included officiating in 143 weddings and over 250 funerals, as well as:
• past member of the Unicoi County Board of Education;
• past member of the Erwin Ruritan Club;
• member of the Erwin Kiwanis Club, having been a past member of the board of directors and a past president;
• football coach at the former Martins Chapel and Evans Elementary schools,
• member of several committees of the Holston Baptist Association;
• member of the Unicoi County Ministerial Association;
• listed in the who’s Who of Religious Educators of America;
• former sports writer for The Erwin Record;
• charter member, and founding member of the board of directors, serving as president, vice president, and secretary of Unicoi County Care and Share;
• volunteered his time in various capacities to support UCHS athletics, including leading devotions for the UCHS football team.
He had a tremendous love for, and shared much of his time in support of, the teenagers of our community. He took teenagers on mission trips to New York City for 15 years and coordinated summer youth camps for nine years.
Tim loved to be outdoors,and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Bennett, in 2002.
Survivors include brothers: Tommy and wife, Phyllis Bennett; Jerry and wife, Kim Bennett, all of Erwin; special friend: Teresa Jordan Fannon of Greeneville, and her children, Brandi Gregg and husband Josh of Greeneville, and Andy Fannon of Greeneville; nephews: Aaron and Terry Bennett of Indiana; Andy Bennett of Erwin; niece: Amber Bennett of Erwin; great nieces: Kiley and Faith Bennett; great nephews: Broox and Blake Bennett; and several aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until service time at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, at Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. David Crutchfield, the Rev. John Kuhne, the Rev.David Snyder and the Rev. Bernie Jones will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Gary Amos.
The committal service and entombment will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 6, at the Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum.
Serving as pallbearers will be Sonny Hendrix, Raymond Dugger, Jim Ramsey, Harold Ramsey, Roland Banks, and Ralph Sparks. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Unicoi County Ministerial Association, deacons and former deacons of Calvary Baptist Church, Gene Ramsey, Jim Ramsey, Sam Sproles, Harold Ramsey, Charlie Noakes, Bob Patt, John Tipton, Kevin Horton, and Chuck Noakes.
