The Rev. Ernest D. Howell, age 85, 233 Elliott Ave., Erwin died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late W.C. “Neal” and Lou-Zenia Bennett Howell.
The Rev. Howell retired from Gordon Furniture Co., where he had worked for 29 years as a machine operator. He retired from the ministry after 45 years of dedicated service to the Lord.
In 1949 he helped to co-found Unaka Springs Free Will Baptist Church. He held services for the patients at Erwin Health Care Center and Unicoi County Memorial Hospital’s long-term care unit until his retirement.
He enrolled in the CCC Camp at age 14, where he worked as a blacksmith prior to his military enlistment.
The Rev. Howell was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a gun crewman.
He was preceded in death by eight siblings: infant sister, Vester Howell, Marita H. Foster, Ruth H. Roberts, Queenie Vastie, Willie Opal Vance, Reverend Lloyd M. Howell, Luda Howell and Harvey L. Howell.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret E. Osborne Howell; sister-in-law, Salley Howell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Erwin Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bernie Jones will officiate. Music will be provided by the Dugger Family, who will sing special selections for the service.
Preston Street, Kevin Street, Jack Osborne, Bobby Tolley and Robert Turner will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. and until the noon service at the funeral home
The committal service will follow at Roselawn Mausoleum.
