Ruth Peterson Higgins, age 94, of the Big Creek Community, passed away on August 22nd, 2021.
Ruth was of the great generation that raised her children to go to church and love God, to cook, farm, sew, and grow a garden. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember the switches she used to correct them.
She was a native of Yancey County and was the daughter of the late Burgis and Mary Sorrells Peterson. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dean Bill Higgins; her daughter, Peggy Ann Johnson; sisters: June Miller (Lloyd), Blanch Hunter, Chandler (Burn & Jay) and Atlas Hensley (Isom); brother, John Peterson (Ruth) and sister-in-law, Margie Peterson and Norman Raines.
Surviving is one brother, Boyd Peterson of Butler, TN; daughters: Wanda Gail Higgins of the home and Amelia Hoilman of Green Mountain; son-in-law, Mike Johnson of Green Mountain; grandsons: Chris Johnson (Kim) of Burnsville and Shane Johnson (Amy) of Burnsville; granddaughter, Megan McKinney (Brandon); great-grandchildren: Haley Wilson (Kevin) of Burnsville, Erika Fox (Austin) of Burnsville and Bailey Johnson of Burnsville and great, great-grandchildren: Addison McKinney of Burnsville, Hayden Wilson, Sawyer Wilson, Asher Wilson all of Burnsville; Ryder Fox, River Fox and Nash Fox of Burnsville. Ruth also leaves behind several nieces and nephews that held a very special place in her heart.
Ruth will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 26th at Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Todd Robinson, Rev. Marvin Hensley and Rev. Dennis Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Hughes Cemetery.
