Robert Lewis “R. L.” Copp, age 90, Erwin passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016 at the Center on Aging and Health. He was a Unicoi County native a nd lifelong resident of Erwin. Mr. Copp was a son of the late Ludy and Edith Foster Copp. He was a United States Navy Veteran honorably serving his country during WWII. Mr. Copp served on the USS Savannah and USS Honolulu. His rank was Baker Second Class and he was awarded the Victory Medal. Mr. Copp was employed by National Casket Company for ten years and retired from Nuclear Fuel Services in 1989 after 20 years of service. He was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of forty years, Paulette Peterson Copp on December 3, 2008; two brothers: Virgil and Hubert Copp; an infant sister and one niece, Carolyn Copp.
R. L. leaves behind to cherish his memories four nephews: Calvin Copp of Delaware, Robert D. Copp and wife, Linda, Greg Copp and wife, Terri and Kendall Copp, all of Erwin; one niece, Mary Mitchell of Erwin; one special sister-in-law, Carla Jean Peterson of NC. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until the hour of funeral service on Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Chris Ward will officiate at the 7:00 P.M. service. Music will be provided by Joey Lewis, Scott Woodby and Inez Chandler. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Committal service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in the Evergreen Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by VFW Post 4933. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
