Robert Carathers, age 65, 120 Crossing Lane, Erwin, died at his residence Friday, April 20, 2012, following an extended battle with cancer. He was a lifelong residence of Unicoi County and son of the late Grady and Grace Ramsey Carathers.
Mr. Carathers was an U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict where he proudly served his country as a light vehicle driver. Mr. Carathers spent many years in the home building business as a carpenter for Callaway Construction. Prior to his disability, he was employed by Evergreen Cemetery.
He loved the outdoors and two of his favorite pastimes were fishing and taking car trips to view the scenery.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Rhonda Salts and one brother, Donald Keith Carathers.
Survivors include two sons: Robert Phillip Carathers and wife April, and Michael Paul Carathers and girlfriend Stacy Lynn Grimes, all of Erwin; two grandchildren: Jacob Robert and Savanna Grace Carathers; one brother: Larry Carathers, Erwin; two sisters: Susie Willis and husband Gene, Erwin and Barbara Lea and husband Bill, South Carolina; caregiver and mother of his sons: Donna Kay Hayes, and husband Roger, Erwin.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 24, at 10 a.m., at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City. The Rev. Ron Fender will officiate. Full military honors will be provided by the Tennessee Honor Guard consisting of Boone Dam VFW Post 4933.
