Riley Metcalf, 76, of Erwin, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at his residence.
He was a native of Flag Pond and a son of the late Ulys and Carie Hensley Metcalf. Mr. Metcalf was a retired truck driver and farmer. He attended Unaka Springs Freewill Baptist Church.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Harvey Metcalf and Estel Metcalf and a sister, Jenieve King.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Bettie Sue Wood Metcalf, of Erwin; sons: Riley G. Metcalf, Erwin; James A. Metcalf, Gulf Shores, Ala.; daughter: Mary Dean Bowman, Erwin; special son-in-law: Tim Bowman, Erwin; two granddaughters: Dolly N. Willis and husband, Randall, Erwin; Rebecca H. Williams and special friend, Samrat Chatterjee of Murfreesboro; sister-in-law: Lois Metcalf, Flag Pond; brother-in-law: Moloy King, Shelton Laurel, N.C.; brothers: Elsie (Puny) Metcalf and wife, Gracie, Flag Pond; George Metcalf and wife Shirlene, Erwin; sisters: Glenna Sparks and husband, Grady of Thaxton, Va.; Aldree Slagel and husband, Jack, Woodfin, N.C.; Katheryn Callero, Varico, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at Unaka Springs Freewill Baptist Church. The Rev. Lonnie Wilson and the Rev. Craig Shelton officiated. Vocal selections were provided by Dennis and Worley Shelton and Marsha, Katie and Caleb Crain.
Interment followed at State Line Cemetery. Active pallbearers were nephews.
Valley Funeral Home was in charge.
