Richard Leslie Speirs

Richard Leslie Speirs, age 84, of 703 W. Main St., Jonesborough, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Four Oaks Health Care Center.
Mr. Speirs is a native of Braxton County, W.Va., and the son of the late William Matthew and Jona Lee Herald Speirs. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He worked as a commercial painter and was of the Baptist faith.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters: Mildred Ewell and Kitty Sparks, and a brother: Jack Speirs.
Survivors include his wife: Geraldine Merritt Speirs of Jonesborough; daughters: Claudia Randolph and husband Johnny of Jonesborough; Sheryl Wiatt of Newport News, Va.; grandchildren: Sasha Jones of Newport News, Va., Micah Jones and wife Kim of Gloucester, Va., Dana Sperlein of Middlesex County, Va., Christy and her husband, Dr. Jay Sleesman of Portland, Ore., Bobby Wiatt of Newport News, Va.; great-grandchildren: Steven Treckey of Topping, Va., Billy Langford of Virginia; nephews: Roy Sparks and wife Charlotte of Delaware; special friends: Lester Bailey, Virgil Moore, Mae Valentine, Jim Long, Gwynne Hughes, Special Four Oaks nurse Kathy Proffitt and his favorite pet, “Yours” the cat.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Dr. Ray Sorrells officiated.
Valley Funeral Home was in charge.
