Richard Laybon Booth

Richard Laybon Booth, 73, Erwin, passed away January 16, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, January 12, 1941 to William Laybon Booth, Jr., and Grace Barnes Booth.

Mr. Booth was a 46-year employee of Nuclear Fuel Services Incorporated in which time he served in many managerial positions, including Director and Vice President of Corporate Services. He was a 50-year member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Mr. Booth was an active member of Erwin Presbyterian Church where he served as Receiving Treasurer for 27 years, Elder, and Sunday School Teacher.

Mr. Booth was an active member of many community organizations. At the time of his death, he was serving as chairman of the board of Erwin Utilities, a board member for Unicoi County Habitat for Humanity, and a board member of the Monroe Foundation. He was a past president of the Erwin Kiwanis Club and past chairman of the Unicoi County Economic Development Board. He had also served his community as chairman of the YMCA Board, chairman of the Red Cross Unicoi County chapter, and Civitan president.

He was a 1958 graduate of E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg. He was a proud 1962 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets G Company and majored in chemical engineering. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Nancy C. Booth and two sons, Brian D. Booth of Leander, Texas and Thomas A. Booth and wife Derley of Christiansburg, Virginia. He also leaves two grandsons Andrew Booth and Nicholas Booth of Leander, Texas; one brother; James C. Booth and wife Elaine of Herndon, Virginia, one nephew Cameron Booth, and one niece Macalin Booth.

A committal service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Sunday, January 19, 2014, in the Mausoleum Chapel of Evergreen Cemetery. Following will be a Celebration of Life at Erwin Presbyterian Church at 2:30 PM. Family and friends will be received in the fellowship hall of the Church following the service.
