Reverend Burgess Shelton

Reverend Burgess Shelton, age 84, 165 Roy Phillips Road, Jonesborough, went home to be with the Lord at 5:00 a.m. Friday December 27, 2013, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

Burgess was born September 25, 1929 in Unicoi County, a son of the late Andrew and Sarah Ray Shelton. He lived much of his life in Western North Carolina and was a well known minister in both Western North Carolina and Unicoi County, serving several missionary Baptist churches in both areas. In addition to pastoring several churches he also worked for Mars Hill College, East Tennessee State University, and taught Culinary Arts for the Job Corp in Franklin, North Carolina.

Burgess was a proud veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1945. He then joined the United States Army where he served from 1946 to 1953.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Aliene Grace Norton Shelton; an infant son, Tommy Drexel Shelton; two grandchildren: Michael Shelton and Treasa Shelton Feldman; four brothers: Stanford Shelton, Emmett Shelton, Dorsey Shelton and Jack Shelton; one sister, Rosa Shelton Harris.

He is survived by three sons: Allen Vance Shelton and wife, Angie, Lakeland, Florida, Mark Andrew Shelton and wife, Kathy, Jonesborough, Jerry Lynn Shelton and wife, Debbie, Burnsville, North Carolina; two daughters: Sarah Margaret Watts, Jonesborough and Shelia Naomi Tilson, Burnsville, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and special friends: Rena Cutshall and Denise Clay, both of Jonesborough. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice for their love, care and consideration.

Funeral service for Burgess will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2013, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Winfred Shelton and Chaplain Anna Butler will officiate. Special music will be provided by Reverend Winfred Shelton and Inez Chandler.
The family will receive friends prior to the service between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, Sarah Margaret Watts, 165 Roy Phillips Road, Jonesborough.

The committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2013, in Clouse Cemetery, Flag Pond. Those attending are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:00 Noon to go in procession to the cemetery.
