Raymond Earl Garland

Raymond Earl Garland, age 90, died on Tuesday, January 13 at Erwin Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was a native of Erwin and the son of the late Darius and Mary Bennett Garland.
A Navy veteran, he served in the South Pacific during World War ll. After the war he worked as an engineer for the Clinchfield Railroad, retiring after 33 years on the job.
He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Erwin Camping Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Wayne and his sister, Virginia Capps, both of Erwin.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Belva Epley Garland; daughters Brenda and Becki Garland; son-in law Mike Higgins; grandchildren, M. Trevor Higgins and Haley Higgins Patton;
great-grandchildren August Samuel Higgins of Chicago, Ill., and Hattie Mae Patton of Boulder, Co.; niece Lisa Garland Tapp and nephew Alan Garland, both of Erwin.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor; a passion for cars swaps, flea markets and camping; and his love for his family. He was generous to a fault, and could always be counted on to help anyone in need.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Meals on Wheels program.
