R.G. “Droopy” Edwards Sr., 70, of Abingdon, Va., formerly of Erwin, died Friday, June 17, 2011, at his home.
He was the son of the late Orvil Edwards and Pansey Ledford Edwards.
He was a member of Chestoa Baptist Church and attended Highlands Fellowship Church in Abingdon. He was retired from CSX Railroad after 25 years of service and served in the U.S. Army.
Other than parents, he was preceded in death by one step son, Edward Mark Kitzmiller.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Carolyn J. Edwards; four sons: Dennis Zucchero, of New York, Robert Gene Edwards Jr., of Georgia, James Lynn Edwards, of Erwin, and William Howard Edwards and wife Barbara, of Virginia; one step daughter: Stephanie Walburn and husband Steve of Alabama; six grandchildren: Jessica Edwards Zucchero, Catlin Edwards Zucchero, Robert Dennis Edwards Zucchero, Chelsea Edwards, Adam Chase Edwards, James Dylan Edwards; four step grandchildren: Shawn Platt, Michael Platt, Summer King and husband Nathan, Tyler Walburn and wife Kasey; one great grandchild: Savannah King; two sisters, Evelyn Willis and husband Merley, of Erwin, Geraldine Willis and husband Monroe, of Johnson City; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service was conducted Monday, June 20, at 7 p.m., in the chapel of Ledford Funeral Home with the Rev. Monroe Willis and the Rev. Merley Willis officiating.
